The cannon was invented in China by filling metal tubes with gunpowder, but it was not usually used for military purposes. Instead, it was used for entertainment (like fireworks). When it spread to Europe, it became a staple weapon of war, and helped turn the tide of many conflicts such as the Hundred Year's War and the Siege of Constantinople.
