God said to Noah that he would destroy the earth by a great flood because of mankind's sinfulness. Noah was to build an ark (boat) to carry his family and 2 of every kind of animal. It rained 40 days and 40 nights, after which Noah sent a bird out to check for dry land. The ark finally landed on what the Old Testament calls Mount Ararat, which may or may not be the Mount Ararat we know today. Noah's Ark was really a place of safety for Noah and his immediate family, and the animals that he had aboard. Its necessity revealed the terrible depravity and violence to which mankind had degenerated as well as the mercy of God in providing a way of escape, which was available to all, but sadly, only a few people chose to go. Biblical Christians consider the ark a symbol of Christ, as faith in Him is our safety from destruction due to sin.

Many questions have been raised about all sorts of things regarding this boat. If close attention is paid to what The Bible does and does not say in the whole account in Genesis 6 - 9, then the story is actually feasible. For example, the Bible does not say the animals were to be full grown. Most would have been young, or even eggs. The Bible says each after its "kind;" for example, "canine kind" would have been the forerunners of wolves and dogs. This is differentiation, not macro-evolution, by the way. According to Genesis the ark would have been about half as big as the Queen Mary. Thus there would have been room enough for all the kinds and the food to sustain them.

Its a big boat with lots of animals

"And God said unto Noah… Make thee an ark of gopherwood; rooms shalt though make in the ark, and thou shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of… the length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. A window shalt thou make in the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side therof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it." (Gen. 6:14-16)

Noah's ark was not designed with sails to utilise wind energy to drive it from point A, to B. It did not have a rudder to steer it to its point B, destination. It was designed just to float, and to maximize the area of it's hull for the storage of its cargo. It is assumed that the arks design was given to Noah by God[Genesis 6:22] in the same way Moses received the plan of the Tabernacle in the wilderness, and Solomon's Temple design was received by King David, Solomon's father. The ark was described as being 300cubits long, 50cubits wide, and 30cubits high. A cubit is equaled to about 18 inches and represents the distance between the tip of the middle finger of an adult male to the back of the elbow. It has been suggested that in those times a cubic was greater than 18 inches. In today's imperial and metric measurement using 18 inches to a cubic, the ark was 450 x 76 x 45 feet or 137 x 23 x 14 metres. Using these dimensions engineers have estimated its displacement to be about 50,000 to tons. It had tree decks and each deck was divided in to compartments. The door was located in the upper area of the hull and many widows were arrayed just below the roof of the ark. The door and windows could be seal like unto a dish, and the whole ship was sealed or could be sealed to be basically air tight so that it could withstand being flooded over by huge seas and even encompassed completely at times, to come forth like an air tight container. The ark was coated with tar both inside and out. The strength of the ark was increased by the Lord's commandment to Noah to use only Gopher wood. It is believed Gopher wood is a type of Cedar, which is rot and wormwood resistant. Authorities estimate that the overall area of the interior of the ark was 1,500,000 cubic feet, and the area of the three decks was about 101.250 square feet. Many people discount the story of Noah's ark simply because they believe all the animals of the world could not fit in the ark, and that is a fair argument. In Genesis 7:22 we read, Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that [are] not clean by two, the male and his female. If we believe the story of creation then we need to consider the fact that all the people who have lived or will live on the face of the earth are the children of Adam and Eve. All the people from the time Noah and his wife, their three sons and theirs wives set foot on dry ground after the waters had resided are their posterity. It is hard to imagine a ship constructed to fit six billion people to save them from a pending flood but it's easy to build a boat to fit two, or eight as in Noah's case, that the whole world could be replenish with the souls of men and women. Likewise with the animals; One set of parents for all the verities of cats, dogs, horses, swine, bees, goats, sheep, cows, birds, apes, Gazelle, rats, kangaroos bears, etc, etc,… It was the 17th day of the second month in the year Noah turned 600 years old that the flood commenced. It rained forty days and forty night before the ark lifted of the ground; It rained for a total of one hundred and fifty days before the fountains of the deep, and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the whole face of the earth, even above the highest mountains were covered with water; And the earth came forth from its baptism, born again; born anew; cleaned and purified from the wickedness of the past which corrupted its face. One year and 3 days from the commencement of the rain did Noah and his family, and precious cargo did begin to leave the ark. Matthew 11:15>
