The term wetland is often used in reference to any sort of ecosystem that holds both water and land. However, the classification of 'wetland' only encompasses four specific types of ecosystems - marshes, bogs, swamps and fens. Within these four wetlands there are subcategories such as tidal or non-tidal marshes, mangrove swamps, and more. Lagoons, estuaries and floodplains are ecosystems which support the interaction of water and land, but are NOT true wetlands.
