There are three main layers of the Earth:

  1. Crust
  2. Mantle
  3. Outer Core

The crust includes dry land and the ocean floor. It is about 5-40 kilometers thick. Depending on where the location is. The thickest parts are under mountains and thinnest beneath the ocean. The crust beneath the ocean is called oceanic crust, it contains rocks that are called basalt. Continental crust forms the continents and mainly consists of rocks like granite.

Next, is the mantle. It is made up of rock that is very hot, but solid. It is about 3,000 kilometers thick. The mantle is divided into three layers. (Highest layer to the lowest layer.)

Lithosphere: The lithosphere is the uppermost layer of the mantle and is very similar to the crust. In Greek, it means "stone." The lithosphere is about 100 kilometers thick.

Asthenosphere: The asthenosphere is hotter and is under increasing pressure. It is softened by the heat and is somewhat soft. It can bend like plastic, but is still solid. In Greek, it means "weak."

Lower Mantle: It is beneath the asthenosphere and is solid. The material reaches all the way to the Earth's core.

The core is separated into two parts: The outer and inner core.

Outer Core: It is molten metal that surrounds the inner core. It is liquid.

Inner Core: The inner core is a dense ball of solid metal. The pressure is so strong that iron and nickel can't spread out and become liquid.
