The "flies refers to the equipment i.e curtains and set pieces are stored and hidden during a production and are lowered down, to the stage to provide scenery. The area where these are stored is normally called the Fly Loft. The term "Flies" was coined because the sets etc would "fly" into position or fly out of position to the loft. In addition any actor using flight harness i.e. Peter Pan would have their flight controlled from this area again this would be referred to as "flying"
