A good horror film is one that draws you into the story and gives you a good scare. Unfortunately, there are many different types of horror movies, and some things will scare you and some won't. There's plenty of opinions out there, but let's look at the different types. Combing through some different sources, here's how I break it down: hauntings, creature features, supernatural slashers, human vs psychotic human, urban legend, demonic, Zombies & subhumans, and vampires. Depending on what you like to watch, each category has a good horror movie in each. It does help if there's a good plot, decent acting, some really atmospheric cinematography, occasionally some music, and a few surprise pop-ups. If you want to find out what a good horror movie is, look to the classics first and then see more recent films. Examples: Jaws (1975), The Shining (1980), Psycho (1960), The Evil Dead (1981), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Rosemary's Baby (1968), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).
I'd disagree about the SAW series being the best. They are very good, but there are other films out there that produce scares and shocks just as effective. Whoever answered the question by actually answering the question: Thanks! But in your answer you suggest that a good horror movie has "occasionally some good music." You must be joking. Scoring can make or break a film. Any great horror film should have an outstanding musical score to enhance the experience. In a nutshell a good horror movie is one that can scare the hell out of you, shock you, make you squirm, and when it's over you walk away saying "That was excellent!"
Friday the 13th! best ever! watch it.
The best horror movie is probably Freddy vs. Jason or Prom Night.
Do you really want a real spine chilling, heart pumping, heart racing, terrifying, hair rising good scary movie then let me be your Horror Buddy as I drop the Horror of Screams on you. The best SPOOK-TAC-ULAR movie ever is/are After Dark Film.....
The scariest movies are definatly a Nightmare on Elm street and the Saw Movies. The fact that someone thought of those is just scary. Texas Chainsaw Massacre the 1974 version isn't really that scary just the fact that people actually did that to people just makes it that much more scary and sad at the same time. But The Shining is also really scary to and Dead Silence (2007) is kind of scary. I puppets scare you then that movie will creep you out. The Excersist and Arachnaphobia is really scary too. So if anyone is looking for scay movies to watch check out those!
I personally like ghosty movies, so I would recommend Paranormal Activity (2007). I also love The Ring (2002), and The Ring Two (2005). They are very good and are worth watching...
This depends on what you want to expose your kids to.
Kids are not mentally developed and do not always differ very well between fact and fiction.
I could give you many reasons for not showing a horror film to kids.
I can however not give you good reasons for doing it.
To show a kid a really scary horror movie could do damage for many years to come.
It would of course depend on what the kid is used to watching. How much the kid actually understand of the world of film-tricks.
If choosing to show a kid a horror-movie, then sit and watch the movie together with them. If they have questions regarding the film, make sure to answer their questions properly.
There are so many good decent films around, so to start with horror movies at a young age is not really necessary.
In some countries that kind of films are rated 18+ for a reason.
I do not personally think that age rating is accurate as in when a person is mature enough.
Some kids at age 12+ will suffer no harm from a horror film. Other adults at age 30+ will be afraid of the dark for years to come after watching even one.
Be sensible and know the kids mental development before doing this.
Hey.
I think That Scream and The Nightmare on Elm's Street would be OK and Child's play too.
If your not scared maybe the Ring and The Grudge :)
One Missed Call American Version is also a good one.
Hope i could answer you
This answer really depends on preference as a parent. The majority of horror movies that are popular right now have tons of gore and sexual content so if your trying to avoid things like that you may want watch some of the older ones. When I was little I really liked the movie called "The Gate" (1987) and maybe even "The Monster Squad" also (1987). Fright Night (vampire flick 1985) is also a great one that doesn't have any nudity and is still pretty scary but in a good way. Another one of my faves is "Silver Bullet" (Warewolf flick 1985). All of the movies above in my opinion are timeless, they may look a bit older but they are all great movies and they are all fine for younger kids to watch. If you are worried about the content you may want to watch them before you show your children just to make sure you okay with all of your choices. Have fun
There are many horror movies that do not contain excessive violence or gore but are still quite scary.
My top picks would be Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Monster House, Beetlejuice, The corpse bride, The nightmare before Christmas and Little Shop of horrors.
But there are many more. Always check the age rating before showing movies to kids.
