Herpes is a contagious simples virus and there are two common types that you could contract. There are also other types of herpes that affect the eyes, fingers and brain but the are not common to have.
Oral herpes is what causes cold sores and fever blisters. Oral herpes is also very common to have, about 80 percent of the populaiton has this type of herpes. Oral herpes is often passed during child hood by being innocently kissed by some one that has it. There is even a small chance of contracting it through sharing utensils or drinks with some one that has a cold sore or fever blisters. But this type of herpes can also be passed during oral sex. For example if your partner has a cold sore while they give you oral sex, they could pass it to your genitals.
Genital herpes is rarely passed out side of having intercourse or oral sex. You're unlikely to be born with it or contract it from a toilet seat. Any one that has intercourse is at risk of getting genital herpes.
