The 'Jaws of Life' - is a name given to a powerful, hydraulically-powered tool, primarily used by fire & rescue services. It consists of two 'arms' connected at a fulcrum, and powered by hydraulic fluid which pushes the arms apart to force things like car doors open. They also work the opposite way - as a cutting tool which can 'slice' the top of a car off - to allow a casualty to be removed easily.
