A jellyfish is an animal in the cnidarian phylum along with anemones and other creatures with nematocysts (stinging cells). Some are tiny and some can grow very large (i.e. the lion's mane jelly). All jellyfish have nematocysts, however some jellies possess very weak nematocysts meant for tiny prey like copopods. The stinging cells in these jellies are generally not felt by humans with the exception of sensitive skin. Cnidarians do not possess brains, but some have eye spots for sensing light.

This is an extract from an article written on another web-site...

"Jellyfish belong the phylum "Cnidaria" which is part of the kingdom "Animalia". Apart from the jellyfish, other species that belong to this phylum include corals, sea anemones, hydras, sea pansies, sea fans and sea whips. The word 'Cnidaria' is derived from the Greek word "cnidos", which means stinging nettle. The term Cnidaria also refers to to Cnidocysts. These are the specialised cells which contain nematocysts, which are the stinging organelles that allow the Cnidaria to subdue their prey or protect themselves from predators.
