There is no Jewish birth ceremony, however, the Torah requires that Jewish boys be circumcised on the 8th day after birth. The circumcision ritual, or brit milah (bris in Ashkenazic) is a big event. Traditionally, there are lots of guests gathered around as the mohel (ritual circumciser, pronounced moyel in Ashkenazic) does the deed, the baby is formally named, and then there is food and festivity. this may be done at home or in the synagogue. Jewish girls have a less bloody naming ceremony, something of a recent innovation, usually involving bringing the baby girl to the synagogue for formal naming and presentation to the congregation.
