"Lambda probe" is another term for oxygen sensor, or O2 sensor. It is a part of your fuel control, fuel injection and emission control system on your car (gas at least, I really don't know about diesels). They tell the ECU (computer brain) how much oxygen is in the exhaust and allows it to fine tune the fuel injection to help burn all the gas. This improves performance and economy, as well as reducing emissions. Most cars have two or four total, and they have a limited lifespan, like say a sparkplug. They can last anywhere from 60,000 to 120,000 or more miles, and they cost anywhere from $50 to $150 a piece. When one fails, it will usually give you a "check engine" light on the dash, but your car will generally still run. It won't , however, pass inspection.
