During the early part of Shakespeare's career, Robert Greene, George Peele, Thomas Kyd and Christopher Marlowe were popular. Later playwrights contemporary with Shakespeare were Thomas Heywood, Thomas Middleton, Thomas Dekker, Ben Jonson, Cyril Tourneur, Philip Massinger, Francis Beaumont, John Fletcher, and John Webster. Those are the most important ones, but there were more.

∙ 13y agoThere were heaps but four were Christopher Marlowe, John Marston, Beaumont and Fletcher. Fletcher collaborated with Shakespeare on a number of plays and was his replacement when he retired. Marlowe went to University unlike Shakespeare and was killed in a tavern brawl. Some of the others were Ben Johnson, a somewhat self-aggrandizing and contentious man who wrote a number of ssatirical plays and also many complimentary things about Shakespeare, and Thomas Kyd, who wrote the famous play The Spanish Tragedy. John Webster was one of the generation of playwrights who followed Shakespeare--his plays The Duchess of Malfi and White Devil are still well known and often performed. Middleton, Dekker and Massinger were other playwrights of the time.

Later playwrights included Thomas Middleton (A Chaste Maid in Cheapside, The Revenger's Tragedy), Thomas Dekker (The Shoemaker's Holiday, The Roaring Girl (with Middleton) ), Ben Jonson (Volpone, The Alchemist, Every Man in his Humour, Bartholomew Fair), John Fletcher (who collaborated with Shakespeare), Philip Massinger (A New Way to Pay Old Debts, The City Madam, The Roman Actor), Francis Beaumont (The Knight of the Burning Pestle (with Fletcher) ), John Marston (The Malcontent, The Dutch Courtesan), and Thomas Heywood (A Woman Killed with Kindness).

∙ 13y agoThere have been many famous playwrights in many countries over the years. The era in which Shakespeare lived was particularly fruitful. Ben Jonson and Christopher Marlowe were two of Shakespeare's contemporaries in England; the Spanish playwright Lope da Vega was also a contemporary.
