The predicate is the part of the sentences that is not the subject and its modifiers. A predicate is the verb and the words that follow the verb that are related to that verb. A sentence can have one or more predicates.

Example sentences:

  • He always goes to the cinema. (goes to the cinema = predicate) cinema = noun
  • Last year I went to the national swimming championships. (went to the national swimming championships = predicate) championships = noun
  • We had lunch then took a walk in the park. (had lunch = predicate) lunch = noun; (took a walk in the park = predicate) walk = noun.
