What were the advantages and disadvantages of trench warfare?

It depends on how you put it into perspective; most people would say there are no Pros to war. Cons: A lot of lives lost, Expenses, Debt, The possibility of losing the war Pros: International Support, Military Gain, Economic Gain, Land Occupation Gain Many People have their own personal opinion on the Pros and Cons; its just how you see it. I am trying very hard to think of any Pros for a World War: Cons: Masses of human misery & stuff like that....

Poison gas was heavy so it would fall into the trenches and kill soldiers who didn't put their mask on in time. When it would rain the trenches would flood and get really muddy. Since there was water in the trenches when it rained a fungus on the soldiers feet would grow. An advantage of the trenches was that they were dug in a zigzag pattern to prevent the enemy from firing down the line.

Pros

By stalemating opposing armies, trench warfare isolated some of the destruction that a mobile war would have scattered across Europe. Although given its highly destructive and immobile nature it blasted a wide swathe of Europe into a cratered wasteland comparable to the face of the moon, far more destruction that a mobile war could have ever created. But given the fact the losses of trench warfare were so high this really is only a small pro.

Cons

Heavy casualties.

Massive local destruction.

"Shell shock" and other emotional scars.
