Humans, for sure...
The dogs of war, war ponies, mules, donkeys, elephants, and camels have historically been used by humans for the purposes of war.
Let's not leave out pigeons -some of them have earned war medals!
A: ANIMALS USED IN WARFARE
By the term, "used" I am going to take that to mean living animals that actually provided a service of some kind, as opposed to those eaten for food or killed for their hides.
The most obvious answer would be the horse. Horses have been used not only by the military in cavalry as they were in the Civil War and others, but also by combatants from ancient times. The horse could be ridden by a soldier to bring him closer to the skirmish and to give the rider a height advantage over soldiers on foot in battle. Horses were also used as transportation. A soldier might have critical information for another unit of his army and needs to cover a considerable distance to deliver that information. A horse, even in modern times, can run over terrain that a motorized vehicle cannot.
Before the advent of vehicles, like jeeps, tanks and such, horses were critical for getting from Point A to B during war. They were heavily used in colonial America, for example. Also in some ancient battles in medieval and earlier periods, the horse played a significant role.
In addition, a single horse can carry a man and his supplies. One or more horses hitched to a wagon or similar conveyance could move considerable loads.
Horses are not the only animal used in war, however. In ancient times, Hannibal used elephants to cross the Alps and attack the Romans. Oxen harnessed to carts were used to haul heavy loads. Dogs have also been present in warfare as both watchdogs or sentries and as attack dogs.
One of the more unusual animals used in warfare is the carrier pigeon. They have been used in both ancient and modern day wars to deliver messages. Carrier pigeons can carry messages over long distances, usually tied to their leg in a small capsule. These pigeons are not like the common pigeon one sees in modern urban areas. "Carrier" is not a breed. Most carrier, sometimes called messenger or homing pigeons are a specially bred domesticated rock pigeon. These birds, when properly trained, can travel hundreds of miles from a location to their home.
It's likely that animals have been used in warfare for as long as man has gone to war.
