As a Mormon, I don't feel my beliefs are 'bizarre', (perhaps you have heard some rumors, but they are usually misrepresentations - we are relatively normal!) but here are some things that people who are unfamiliar with Mormons might think are strange or unusual:

Eternity:

1.) We believe that we lived as spirits with God in heaven in a 'pre-mortal life' prior to being born here on earth.

2.) We believe that if we are 'sealed' in the temple we will live together with our spouse, children, parents, etc in heaven.

3.) We believe in eternal progression - we continue to live, grow, improve, and learn in the afterlife.

4.) We believe that as children of God, we have the potential to become like Him. Through eternal progression (#3) we may eventually become like God is.

The Second Coming of Christ:

5.) We believe that when Jesus Christ returns, He will establish Zion on the American Contient and will have a millennial reign upon the earth of a thousand years.

6.) We believe that at the second coming of Jesus Christ all will be risen from the graves and will be resurrected (their spirits will united with perfected bodies).

7.) When Christ returns those with priesthood keys (#14) will return that power to him in a place called Adam-ondi-Ahman in Missouri, USA.

Nature of God:

8.) We believe that God the Father and Jesus Christ are two seperate beings, each with glorified, immortalized bodies of flesh and bone.

9.) We believe that Joseph Smith literally saw and spoke with God the Father and Jesus Christ.

Book of Mormon:

10.) We believe that the Native Americans (or at least some tribes) are the decendants of the Book of Mormon people - Israelites who crossed the sea anciently to escape the captivity.

11.) We believe that Joseph Smith was lead to buried golden plates by an angel, and that he translated those plates by the power of God through the Urim and Thummim into what is now the Book of Mormon.

Prophets, scripture, angels, etc:

12.) We believe that there is other scripture in addition to the Bible, and that God continues to reveal His will to us today. (i.e. we continue to add to the scriptural canon)

13.) We believe that there is a living prophet now just like in Old Testament times.

14.) We believe that those ordained to the priesthood and hold priesthood keys are literally given power and authority to act in God's stead on earth

15.) We believe that angels are those who have lived or will live upon this earth, and that they are sent here as ambassadors of heaven to guide and direct us. This also applies to several Biblical angels (Adam = Michael the archangel; Noah = Angel Gabriel).

16.) We believe that all are entitled to recieve personal revelation from God to guide and direct them, and focus on developing a personal relationship with God.

17.) Adult Mormons can choose to participate in a sacred Temple ceremony in which they make further commitments to Christ (think of it as a step beyond baptism). Following this ceremony they wear a sacred undergarment throughout their life to remind them of their commitments and as a symbol of their devotion (the so-called 'magic underwear').

Salvation:

18.) We believe that we can be baptized in behalf of our deceased ancestors, giving them a chance to accept salvation through Jesus Christ in the afterlife.

19.) We believe in a nearly universal salvation - almost everyone, including the wicked, will eventually confess Christ before judgement day and be rewarded with eternal life in one of three degrees of Heaven.

20.) We believe that only true believers who intentionally deny Jesus Christ can be damned.

Creationism is a political as well as religious movement that has its own agenda. Mormons are not Creationists in that sense. Mormons do believe that the earth and all things on it were created by Jesus Christ, but do not subscribe to the strict interpretation by some that it happened in 7 days (168 hours).

Why can't Mormons talk openly about some of their religious ceremonies and rituals?

It's not that we can not talk about it, it's that we choose not too. We believe that these "ceremonies and rituals" are sacred. If we were to discuss these specific things it would allow others to mock and ridicule the very things we hold sacred. These things are sacred not secret.

What religion contrasts with the Mormon religion?

Many religions contrast with Mormonism. Mormons believe that there are three levels of heaven, when many other Christians believe there is only one. Mormons believe that people have the ability to become gods after death, when some other Christians believe that is blasphemous, making themselves above or equal to Jehovah. Some "fundamentalist" Mormon splinter groups believe that there are no limitations to the number of spouses one might have, when many other Christians believe that you can only have one.

Did you know that according to Mormons and Mormonism all religion is a lie except for theirs of course theirs is the one true religion and this is their official position?

This is the official position of pretty much every religion worldwide. Most religions believe that theirs is the only true religion. Unlike many other religions, however, Mormons also believe that all other religions have some truth and therefore have good to contribute. Mormons seek out the good in all things (including other faiths) and celebrate the good.

Is it true that if you grow up outside the Mormon religion you'll never make it to heaven as the Mormons teach?

There are no facts on what happens after death, if heaven exists there or not. If you believe in it you believe in it. The Mormons can be right or they can be wrong. Clearly other religions would not agree with them.As for what Mormons teach regarding this, the answer is NO. Mormons believe that as God loves all mankind, He wants to allow as many as possible to return to him and live with him in heaven. They believe that a huge majority of people will go to heaven, and only a very small part will be damned. They also believe that people may accept the gospel of Jesus Christ after death, before they are judged. In fact, the whole reason Mormons build temples is so that they can be baptized for those who have died. They believe that if they are baptized for someone who is dead, that person will have the opportunity to accept the baptism and and be saved.
