"-ing" forms of verbs. In conjunction with a conjugation of the verb "to be" and sometimes even other helping verbs, present participles form "progressive tenses":

I was WALKING. (past progressive) Thou art SLEEPING. (present progressive) He will be CLIMBING. (future progressive)

And note that when you use present participles as nouns, they are often called gerunds:

WALKING is fun. SLEEPING is healthy. CLIMBING can lead to falling off cliffs.

The PAST TENSE is the form of the verb used to show what happened in the time before now.

Past tense examples:

"Last year I sold real estate."

"Originally she lived in Australia but moved to Brazil with her parents when she was six. Her parents taught her to speak German in addition to English. When she was little she loved to dance to the music she heard on the radio."

The PRESENT TENSE is the form of the verb used when referring to things that are happening now or are habitually performed or are true without reference to time.

e.g.

"I sell real estate."

"She is Australian. Her parents are German. She speaks English and German. She lives in Brazil and is learning Portuguese. She loves samba music."
