Erosion is the movement of weathered particles from one location to another location by the agents of erosion: wind, water, ice, and gravity. The following are some examples of erosion:

  • wind carrying small sediment particles as in a desert sandstorm
  • streams and rivers carrying sediment loads as seen in the muddy Mississippi River
  • glaciers plucking and carrying rocks as evidenced by glacial erratics and soils found in the Midwest
  • landslides
  • headward erosion as seen in the Grand Canyon and Niagra Falls
  • tsunamis scouring inland surfaces
  • floods, which transport great amounts of rock and soil
