Mauna Kea, meaning "White Mountain" in Hawaiian as it is known for its snow capped summit, hosts the Keck Observatory. Though it isn't the highest mountain, as Mt. Everest holds that honor, it is the largest mountain on earth when measured from its base which starts at the sea floor. Mauna Loa, meaning "Long Mountain", is the second largest mountain in Hawaii and is known for its macadamia nut orchards which are found all over its slopes. Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on earth and is the home of Halemaumau crater, one of only five molten lava pits found in the world. In Hawaiian mythology, it is also the home of Pele, the volcanoe fire goddess.

Haleakala, meaning "House of the Sun", is known for its breath-taking sunrise views and is the third largest mountain in Hawaii.
