What are some graduate study challenges and strategies for success?

  1. Financial affordability must correspond to return on investment, including covering the opportunity cost of attending graduate school rather than doing something else instead.
  2. Acquisition of tools of the trade (i.e. new skills) must match the exclusivity of the school. In other words, if you can get the same skills without going to school, then don't go to school.
  3. Weight of prestige must balance against the weight of competition. In short, if you think that you're going to get brownie points for being a grad school graduate when millions of others can lay claim to the same fact, then how distinct are you really?
  4. The trade-off of time at school for compounded earnings not earned must be projected to determine whether it pays off to take grad school on a part-time basis or full-time.
