No particular person started heavy metal, rather, certain bands inspired it. Heavy metal evolved from blues rock and psychedelic rock. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Cream, and Deep Purple laid down the groundwork for heavy metal, however, they themselves are not heavy metal. The first band to be considered heavy metal even today is Black Sabbath, who released their first album in 1970.

the Smashing Pumpkins were inspires by artists like My Bloody Valentine, The Cure, goth rock, prog rock, and heavy metal bands.
They started out as an Indie metal group; then Mike Kroeger moved to Vancouver and started playing with heavy metal bands, so they were a heavy metal group for a while, however, when they were growing up, they wanted to be a rock n' roll group; Today they are considered a Rock/Alternative group.
This is my opinion, but I, certainly pick rock, metal/heavy metal bands, because they ALWAYS rock on, and have a very, sometimes, shocking face when you see them on TV, or live.
The band, I Am King, sings heavy metal rock. They recently signed to Velocity/Rise Records. Created in 2010, the band consists of members selected from other bands in Pennsylvania to create their vision or heavy metal rock.
