The first detail you need to know is that the Vietnamese War (roughly 1963 to 1975) and the Korean War (1950-1953) were two different wars taking place at different times and in different locations. There are some striking similarities, however. In both cases, a country was divided into two parts, with the northern part being communist and the southern part being anti-communist, and the US became involved in a struggle to prevent the north from taking over the south, an effort which was successful in the case of the Korean War and unsuccessful in the case of the Vietnamese War.

Taking place in 1950-1953, the Korean War offers to contemporary observers any number of interesting facts. One would be the dramatic swing of fortunes of the adversaries: initially pushed back to a small area in the deep south of what would eventually become South Korea, the South Korean forces (aided by troops from various Western nations) pushed back the North Korean invaders all the way to the border of China in the north. In turn, aided by Chinese troops, the North Koreans once again took to the offensive: they advanced to the famous 38th parallel before the war came to a halt.
During the Korean War (1950 -1953) Australia responded by immediately offering military assistance. Some 17,000 Australians served in the Korean war.
