Comparison between Jim/Della and the magi. "Della's beautiful hair fell about her rippling and shining like a cascade of brown waters." Then goes on to compare it to a garment. The actual sentence is a simile, but the entire statement is a metaphor.

Some examples of figurative language in "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry include metaphors like "Della’s beautiful hair fell about her rippling and shining like a cascade of brown waters," and similes like "The Magi brought valuable gifts, but that was not among them." These elements add depth and imagery to the storytelling.

The quote "So now Della's beautiful hair fell about her rippling and shining like a cascade of brown waters" is a simile because it how her hair is similar to something you normally wouldn't see as similar and uses the word "like" to do it.

The story "The Gift of The Magi" is a short story by O.Henry. The title of the story itself is a metaphor. Through the title, O.Henry wishes to compare the gifts given by the three wise men (the Magi) to Baby Jesus, to the gifts that Jim and Della exchanged during Christmas. O.Henry wants to convey that out of all the people who give and exchange gifts, these two, Jim and Della should be considered the wisest, for, they had sacrificed their most valuable possessions and went out of their way to buy gifts for each other.
