Non-specific defenses in your body guard you against many harmful substances. This includes the skin and mucous membranes, cellular and chemical factors, microbial antagonism, transferrin, fever, interferons, the complement system, acute-phase proteins, cytokines, inflammation, and phagocytosis.

If you need further explanation of any of these individual parts, please contact me on my page.

Innate Defenses:

Ones we are born with these. All invaders are dealt with using a limited array of weapons. They can not be modified to enhance the response. These have been called non-specific defenses since any invasion triggers it. Splinters, burns, cuts, blows, etc. It is not one-one response.

Inflammation is a coordinated response that involves innate defenses. Redness, heat, pain, and swelling.

Fever acts to discourage infection.

Physical barriers include the skin and mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, GI tract, urinary tract and genital tract. The flow of product on the membrane removes pathogens.

Antimicrobial substances such as lysozymes, peroxidase enzymes, lactoferrin, and defensins inhibit or kill microorganisms.

Normal Flora competes with pathogens for the same niche and stimulates the host defenses. Protection is very important. These prevents adherence. Disruption of the normal flora can result in various infections by opportunists.

These are non-specific (splinters, cuts, bruises) not one on one responses:

1. Physical barriers include the skin and mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, GI tract, urinary tract and genital tract. The flow of product on the membrane removes pathogens.

2. Antimicrobial substances such as lysozymes, peroxidase enzymes, lactoferrin, and defensins inhibit or kill microorganisms.

3. Normal Flora competes with pathogens for the same niche and stimulates the host defenses. Protect is very important. These prevents adherence. Disruption of the normal flora can result in various infections by opportunists.
