Viruses react to the environment, reproduce (through asexual means), and need energy to survive. They are also capable of passing hereditary information, but that could be included in reproduction.

Virus is not a living organism. Although they possess some characteristics of a living organism, they are not classified as "living" because they do not possess all the characteristics. Some characteristics that make them living-like are:

* can reproduce (but this can only occurs in a host cell) * Possesses nucleic acid (dsDNA (double stranded DNA), ssDNA (single stranded DNA), dsRNA (double stranded RNA), and ssRNA (single stranded RNA))

They are not alive. They are like cockle burrs that "grab" hold of your clothing or a dog's coat. They are hijackers. Once they get attached to the cell of a living cell, they can take it over and "make" the living cell produce virus particles instead of cell parts. These particles can assemble into more viruses and then they break out of the cell (killing it) and begin the process again. They cannot make more viruses on their own.

No virus can not be a living thing, because it can not uptake and digest any nutrient and it can not produce its progeny on its own. They can only reproduce when it infects a host!
