The American lobster, the usual lobster that is served at red lobster, an American restaurnat is called Homorus Americanis. Fun Fact that i like to share with all the people i talk to the American lobster in fact is not red when it is alive. In fact it is usually a white gray or blue color. The average lifespan (if left un eaten and uncooked this long) is 15 years. The color pigment Anatxatin, which is red only appears when it has been cooked fully.

It depends which lobster you are talking about. The typical American and Canadian lobster, with large claws, is Homarus americanus. There are also spiny lobsters which occur in tropical waters around the world. In California and the Carribean, it is likely a member of the genus Panulirus. But in other parts of world, it could be Jasus or Palinurus, or any of 5 other genera.
