There are more than 50 features of down syndrome but not all people with the syndrome have the same problems. Down syndrome is caused by an extra chromosome 21.

  1. They are short and slow-growing.
  2. They have a weak muscles. Some belly muscles also are weak and the stomach sticks out.
  3. They have a short neck.
  4. They are short stocky and have short arms and legs.
  5. Some children have a wide space between the big toe and 2nd toe.
  6. Some appear to have slanted eyes.
  7. They may have small ears.
  8. They may have a tongue that sticks out slightly.
  9. The teeth often come in late and the not in the same order as other children.
  10. Most have mild to moderate cognitive disability.
  11. More than half have a heart defect.
  12. They often have behavior problems or autism.
