The old globe theater and the new one have been made with the same materials and the same structure (apart from the stage which had to be made in concrete for health and safety reasons). When they built the new one, they wanted it to look exactly the same so they made it look exactly the same.

Both were open-air playhouses, build on a plan of a thrust stage surrounded by a courtyard and a ring of covered box seats. The were both located in the Southwark district south of the River Thames, within a block or two of each other. The Rose was older and smaller than the Globe.

If you are a groundling, you stand through the whole performance. If you have a seat, it is a wooden bench and not that comfortable. There is no electronic amplification of the actors' voices. The pillars on the stage can sometimes obstruct your view. There is very little by way of stage props and no painted scenery.

Todya, the audience is raked. They also created the first covering over the house. The pit area for the groundlings is now known for the orchestra pit.
