What are the main characteristics of classical music from the 18th century?

- Mainly homophonic-melody above chordal accompaniment
- There is variety and contrast in mood throughout a piece, baroque has the same mood throughout.
- There was a variety of dynamics using crescendo, diminuendo and forzandos.
- There was more a focus on beauty of melody, and an elegant character that was held in balance with the rest of the piece.
- The basso continuo was abandoned during this period. This was partly because Classical Music was aimed at amateurs as well as advanced players and not all amateurs can improvise from a figured base. The main reason was that classical composers wanted more control over their music; they preferred to specify an accompaniment rather than trusting the judgment of the player.
- The piano, instead of the harpsichord, offered much more subtlety in the playing and less terrace dynamics.

* an alberti bass * a very prominent form/structure eg - sonata form, ternary form, binary form...etc * even four-bar phrases * a cadence to end a phrase * detailed articulation * not too much use of the lower keyboard * light * playful (especially for Mozart's music)
