What is the difference between a worksheet and a spreadsheet?

Worksheet and workbook are terms specific to Microsoft Excel. A workbook may consist of one or more worksheets. A spreadsheet is the same thing as a worksheet except it is a general term the can be used to describe handwritten spreadsheets as well as spreadsheets created by programs other than Excel; however, Excel worksheets are often called spreadsheets.

Why total is not used when finding the totals instead sum is used in Excel?

Sum is a mathematical term that is more commonly used than totals. A SUM function is found in all spreadsheet applications, not just Excel. There were other spreadsheet programs in existence before Excel and they used Sum, so Excel was following the standard. The SUM function is actually capable of doing lots of other things, as you can enclose any calculation in its brackets, though it is generally best to reserve SUM for summing a range of cells. There is also a function in Excel called SUBTOTAL which can do a range of calculations, combining some of the standard ones into a single function, such as summing, averaging, finding a maximum and minimum value etc.Sum is a mathematical term that is more commonly used than totals. Why is a spreadsheet called a spreadsheet?

It is because it is a electronic spreadsheet program. A spreadsheet in the traditional sense is a piece of paper with rows and columns that people use to write figures on and do calculations. In 1978 a business student named Dan Bricklin, thought that there should be a simpler way of doing them than on paper, as they were slow and tedious to use, especially when changes in the figures needed to be made. He got together with Bob Frankston who was a friend and a programmer. They created VisiCalc, the first electronic spreadsheet program. Many other spreadsheet programs were created by other people after that and Microsoft Excel is one of those.

What are the applications of MS Excel?

Excel can be used for almost anything where putting information in table format would be useful. Excel is somewhat limited in the way it handles text so if your project requires large volumes of text, MS Word would be a better option. However, if your project involves numbers (and especially if you want to perform calculations based on those numbers) Excel is a very powerful tool because of the built in mathematical functions. Excel can also be used for many other things. I have even used it to develop floor plans for a house.

What are some other known spreadsheet applications or programs?

Here are some spreadsheet applications, other than MS Excel: 1-2-3, Open Office Calc, IBM Lotus Symphony, KSpread, Z-Cubes-Calci, Resolver One, Gnumeric, Mariner Cals, Mesa, Quattro Pro (no longer published, but many organizations still use it), Numbers

What are the pivot tables normally used for?

Pivot Tables help you organize and sort data. They are easier to use for summary and analysis than a plain spreadsheet. Pivot Tables are used in Microsoft Excel programs.

What is underlying formula in Excel?

An underlying formula in Excel is used in a spreadsheet to do something different than the formula does. An underlying formula can be used to remove values or display numbers.

Who invented Excel?

Excel is a spreadsheet developed by Microsoft but is by no means the first spreadsheet. The very first spreadsheet was developed (or invented) by Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston called VisiCalc. VisiCalc was a spreadsheet written to operate on the Apple II computer and was released in 1979. The program was sold to Lotus who developed Lotus 123 from the VisiCalc principle. Lotus 123 was released in 1983. Excel, first released in 1987, is a development of the early spreadsheets and therefore cannot strictly be classified as an invention. Excel is far more powerful than VisiCalc but that is also a result of development over the years that Microsoft have been working on the product, and the increase in computing power. Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston never patented the product because software patents were almost unheard of in the 70s.

Is notepad a spreadsheet editor?

No. Notepad the piece of software, is a text editor. Excel is a spreadsheet. A notepad in terms of paper for writing on is different than Excel and also different to a paper-based worksheet, on which spreadsheets like Excel are computerised versions of.

Why do you need Microsoft Access especially if you have Microsoft Excel?

Microsoft Access is a database application and Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application, so they are two different kinds of application. There are things that both can do, but if you want to create a proper database, then Access is better than Excel. It has far more facilities for working with databases than Excel does. Because of that, it is simpler to do lots of things in Access than in Excel. If you want to create a spreadsheet, then that is what Excel is used for, though you can do a lot of things Excel does in Access. If you already have Excel and want to create databases, then you can, but you won't be able to do the really sophisticated things that Access can do and which a really good database needs, such as queries, reports, relationships etc. If you want a really good database that can do those things, then you need Access.

What are the advantages of Microsoft Excel to scientific calculator?

Excel can do a vast range of things that a scientific calculator can't. It has hundreds of built-in functions, far more than a scientific calculator has. One of the biggest differences and advantages is being able to see lots of figures all at once in a column or row or a full table, whereas you can only see one at a time on a scientific calculator. Then there are things you can do like charts and databases, what-if analysis and many other things. Excel, or any spreadsheet, is far more powerful than a calculator. A spreadsheet is the best calculator on your computer.
