First-degree burns are red and very sensitive to touch, and the skin will appear blanched when light pressure is applied. First-degree burns involve minimal tissue damage and they involve the epidermis (skin surface). These burns affect the outer-layer of skin causing pain, redness and swelling. sunburn is a good example of a first-degree burn.

Symptoms

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Peeling skin
  • Shock (pale, clammy skin, weakness, bluish lips and finger nails)
  • White or charred skin

Basically, a sunburn: Look for reddened skin, warm/hot to the touch, sensitive to touch. Brief pressure with a fingertip will make a nearly white fingerprint that quickly returns to the reddened color of local skin. The patient may exhibit chills or complain of being too cold, as so much blood is near the surface as the burn heals.

Blisters or open burns are Not 1st degree.

it depends on the degree of the burn

1st-redness, pain, minor swelling without blisters

2nd- blisters, severe pain, rednes. may break open and the area is wet looking with a bright pink to cherry red color.

3rd- dry, can look waxy white, leathery, brown, or charred. There may be little or no pain or the area may feel numb at first because of nerve damage
