A cliffhanger means something that takes the characters to an exciting point and then stops in the middle. You need to think of your own exciting scenes if you're going to be a writer.
One warning: cliffhangers are very frustrating, especially if you're writing a series of stories or books where the reader has to wait for the next one to be published! I'd save the cliffhangers for the end of a chapter, where the reader just has to turn the page to find out what happens -- this is very effective in getting the reader to finish your book.
As the protagonist opens the mysterious letter, a loud knock is heard at the door, setting the scene for an unexpected visitor or confrontation in the next chapter.
Emotion. You have to make the reader care for the characters and want to know what's going to happen next.
