If you are currently taking a tricyclic antidepressant Clomipramine 50mg per daycould you benefit from taking 5-HTP at the same time or as with SSRI's should this action be monitored by your doctor?
50mg of clomipramine (Anafranil) is not a therapeutic dose. Usual dosages are 150mg-300mg. Better try SSRIs, SNRIs, Wellbutrin or others before clomipramine, because it has many and strong side effects. However clomipramine is a very strong anti-depressant, it would reduce anxiety and it is the… most potent med for OCD. 5HTP should have far fewer side effects than clomipramine, but it has not been thoroughly been studied. For this reason, it is unlikely that a doctor would recommend it. ALWAYS work with your doctor. If you have no results, change doctors, but don't do anything on yourself. ( Full Answer )

Tricyclics are more potent antidepressants compared to the newer SSRIs. The reason SSRIs tend to be prescribed more, however, is because tricyclics are less well tolerated due to their antimuscarinic effects, such as: dryness of mouth, constipation, dizziness, abnormal heart rhythm, blurred vision a…nd urinary retention. Trycyclics cannot be given to people with with hypotension or heart problems. SSRIs generally have a longer half life (15-50 hrs vs. 12-32 hrs for trycyclics) and do not require as high a concentration in the blood as tricyclics for their therapeutic effect. ( Full Answer )

There are many excellent antidepressants, many of the best are in the class of SSRI antidepressants because they have fewer and less severe side effects than older types (e.g. MAOI antidepressants, tricyclic antidepressants). However what works for one person does not for another, so you and your… psychiatrist may have to try several before finding a good antidepressant for you . ( Full Answer )
SNRI is a class of antidepressants known better as Serotonin and Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors. They increases (to some degree) the amount of serotonin and noradrenaline (norepinephrine) in the brain.
As part of an ongoing treatment study of co-occurring bipolar mania and cannabis abuse in adolescents, we obtained bi-monthly urine toxicology screens using the Status DS⢠immunoassay. It was noted that the first five subjects initially tested negative for tricylcic antidepressants (TCAs) but a…ll five tested positive after being treated with topiramate or placebo and quetiapine. All of the patients denied using TCAs, but were forthcoming regarding their drug use. A quetiapine trough blood level was also obtained on the same morning that the urine toxicology screens were performed and the results paralleled the TCA toxicology findings, i.e., when subjects showed quetiapine in their serum (5.1 to 85 ng/ml), they tested positive for TCAs. However, when two of the subjects were non-adherent to their medications and their quetiapine levels were undetectable, their toxicology screens were negative for TCAs. After these two patients were encouraged to take their medications and had detectable quetiapine levels, they once again tested positive for TCIt looks like Seroquel will show up as a positive for TCA panel.. Tricyclics, e.g. Amitriptyline and impramine, were compounds that were introduced in the 1960s to treat depression by helping boost synaptic levels of serotonin and noradrenalin. They were called 'tricyclics' because their structure contains three amine rings joined together. Tricyclics are not comm…only prescribed today and have been superseded by the newer and safer 'selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors' or 'SSRIs' for short. Tricyclics are more effective in treating serious depression than SSRIs, however; so their main use today would in those cases where the patient's depression is resistant to SSRIs or other types of antidepressants . One of the older class of antidepressant. They worked by destroying a chemical in the brain called monoamide oxidators. This enzyme prevented the good chemicals , like serontonine, norepinephrine, and dopamine , of the brain from from being able to do their job ( Full Answer )
How long before sex drive returns after taking antidepressants and isn't an antidepressant in some respects working against getting better since lack of testostorine and depression are connected?
Hi, Not sure about testosterone and depression being linked, i thought depression was due to low levels of serotonin. In my boyfriend's experience its a few months before your sex life returns to normal. However, you need to take the full course of medication and wait to see what a doctor says a…s depression alone without medication has a massive impact on sex drive. It also depends on the nature of your medication some anti depressants such as SSRIs are used to target premature ejaculation so shouldn't impact too greatly on sex drive. Hope that helps. Absolutely. And, unique among antidepressants, it has the interesting property of elevating serotonin and endorphin levels for both the ejaculator _and_ the recipient. Open wide!
Tricyclic antidepressants typically bind to serotonin (and, in some cases, norepinephrine) transporters to inhibit reuptake back into presynaptic neurons, which results in the net increase in levels of monoamine (serotonin and norepinephrine) in the synapse. This synaptic increase allows for more se…rotonin (and/or norepinephrine) to bind/rebind with postsynaptic serotonin (or norepinephrine) receptors, which upmodulates the serotonin (or norepinephrine) signal. Not technically. Seroquel (quetiapine) is an atypical antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It acts as a serotonin, dopamine, and adrenergic receptor antagonist, meaning that the drug will compete with endogenous neurotransmitters for binding sites. However, some competiti…on is for autoreceptors on the presynaptic terminal which could lead to an increase in release of serotonin and norepinephrine, depending on the type of autoreceptor. At this juncture, it is not clear how synaptic levels of serotonin and norepinephrine are affected when compared to baseline. Additionally, quetiapine is converted into a psychoactive metabolite, norquetiapine. This metabolite acts as a strong norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake inhibitor. These properties are associated with antidepressant effects. For the treatment of major depressive disorder, seroquel could potentially be used, but would not be indicated or recommended as a first line of treatment. ( Full Answer )

Clozapine is not a tricyclic antidepressant, but rather an atypical antipsychotic medication. Atypical antipsychotics differ from typical antipsychotics by the range of receptors that are modulated or affected. Typical antipsychotics primarily inhibit Dopamine 2 (DA2) receptors. Atypical antip…sychotics block a host of receptors, namely serotonin and dopamine, but also including alpha and histamine receptors in varying proportions. The benefit of Clozapine is that there is a lesser degree of dopamine inhibition that is aimed at reducing certain side effects. ( Full Answer )
Many things. The pharmacist and/or package insert list a bunch of them. Probably the most well known, common one are MAO inhibitors. Molecularly conflicts are high with tricylics. Hope that was of some help. Good Luck.
Tricyclic are a family of antidepressants that were given to people before the SSRI. Often psychiatrists prescribe a tricyclic and a newer anti-depressant usually a selective serotonin Inhibitor or a serotonin Norefenefphan selective inhibitor. Your doctor can usual decide what is safe
"Anti-" is the prefix. The most accurate definition for "anti-" in this context is "serving to prevent, cure, or alleviate."
No. Bupropion (aka Wellbutrin) is known as an atypicalantidepressant in that it prevents the reuptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine (to a lesser extent). Typicaltricyclic antidepressants only block reuptake of serotonin andnorepinephrine. It's unique dopamine reuptake inhibition capabili…tyallows it to be used to treat nicotine addiction (marketed asZyban) and, to some extent, attention deficit disorder.Furthermore, it lacks the classic three ring chemical structure oftricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). No. Tricyclic antidepressants primarily increase levels of serotonin and, in some cases, norepinephrine as well. If estrogen levels increase incidentally, they do so through secondary effects in the neuroendocrine system as a result of these monoamine increases.
Is a bad idea. Exist antidepressant drugs that are forbidden for teens under 18 years old, for example Prozac, Zoloft etc. Why are forbidden? Because a dangerous side effect is suicidal thoughts. Best regards, David

First, be patient. Many antidepressants take 4-6 six to show signs of improvement while newer generation antidepressants such as Lexapro can show signs of improvement as early as one week. Sometimes antidepressants are working but the effects are subtle. Keep a daily journal of your mood and depress…ive thoughts (such as thoughts of suicide) to track your progress. If you do not show signs of improvement then talk to your doctor about switching to a different one. The process of finding an effective antidepressant and the effective dose of that antidepressant is sometimes so long and laborious that it is easy to lose track of signs of worsening or improvement. A combination of therapy and antidepressants will be the most effective. ( Full Answer )
I went to see a new physician once, other than my pain doctor. He did a drug test. The only things I had taken were, hydrocodone, Xanax and Tramadol. When the test came back, he asked me if I take antidepressants. I don't. It had to be the tramadol that showed up as a tryciclic antidepressant. Could…n't have been the others. SO, my answer is absolutely Yes, tramadol will show up as a tricyclics AD. It is noted in the literature that it does have antidepressant properties. Whether that is related, I am unsure.
