Common symptoms of piles (hemorrhoids) include:

  • painless bleeding from your anus, which you may notice in the toilet bowl or when you use toilet paper, or from soiled underwear
  • a lump on your anus
  • a slimy discharge of mucus
  • a feeling that your bowels haven't emptied completely
  • itchy skin around your anus
  • swelling around your anus
  • pain and discomfort after a bowel movement if you have external piles

These symptoms may be caused by problems other than piles. You should visit your GP for advice.

Don't be scared of going to your GP, he or she propably have seen much worser things. They don't do anything weird to see if you have them. You lay on your side with your pants down just enough so they can take a look, that's all.

  • A hard, possibly painful lump may be felt around the anus. It may contain coagulated blood. Piles that contain blood are called thrombosed external hemorrhoids.
  • After passing a stool, a person with piles may experience the feeling that the bowels are still full.
  • Bright red blood is visible after a bowel movement.
  • The area around the anus is itchy, red, and sore.
  • Pain occurs during the passing of a stool.

Piles can escalate into a more severe condition. This can include:

  • excessive anal bleeding, also possibly leading to anemia
  • infection
  • fecal incontinence, or an inability to control bowel movements
  • anal fistula, in which a new channel is created between the surface of the skin near the anus and the inside of the anus
  • a strangulated hemorrhoid, in which the blood supply to the hemorrhoid is cut off, causing complications including infection or a blood clot

Some common symptom of internal hemorrhoids is rectal bleeding. It start to occur as a result of veins in the anus swelling and breaching the anal wall. Excessive straining can force an internal hemorrhoid to push out through the anal opening. These symptoms include: black or tarry stool, blood clots, blood in the stool, lightheadedness, faintness, dizziness and massive rectal bleeding. Internal hemorrhoids can cause severe itching in the anal region.
