There are many ways of classifying cases, for example state vs. federal court cases. But I would say the two major types of cases are civil (lawsuits) and criminal.

P.S. I am not an attorney and have no formal legal training, but that much I know.

This seems to be one of the most confusing subjects for law students, it's Subject Matter Jurisdiction. However, it's rather simple.

State Courts can hear any kind of criminal case committed inside its states authority with the exception of a few types of cases which have exclusive federal jurisdiction (crimes involving foreign nationals like ambassadors where permission from their government is given for arrest, impeachment of of the president, are to name a few).

They may also handle civil controversies where there is a valuation less than $75,000 or other matters where, once again, the Federal Jurisdiction applies (trademark/copyright (intellectual property) infringement cases, states bringing suits against other states, and more).
