joints are classified structurally and functionally and biochemically there are three structural classification of joints

  • fibrous joint eg skull
  • cartilaginous joint eg spine or ribs
  • synovial joint eg knee
functionally classified
  • synarthrosis (permit little or no mobility eg skull)
  • amphiarthrosis(slight mobility eg vertebrae)
  • diathrosis(synovial joints eg shoulder)
biochemical classification
  • simple joint eg shoulder joint
  • compound joint eg radiocarpal joint
  • complex joint eg knee joint
types of synovial joints
  • hing joint (allows flexion and extension like elbow and knee joint)
  • pivot joint (rotation of one bone around another eg atlas and axis bones)
  • ball and socket joint(abduct/internal and external rotation eg shoulder and hip)
  • saddle joint(flexion/extension/adduction/abduction/circumduction eg CMC joint of the thumb)
  • condyloid joint(flexion/extension/adduction/abduction/circumduction eg wrist joint
  • gliding joint (gliding movements eg intercarpal joints)

What are examples of the 3 types of joints?

There are three types of joints in your body. You have fibrous, cartilaginous and synovial types of joints in your body. You have fibrous type of joint between, say the bones on the top of skull, between the teeth and teeth bearing bones and lower end of tibia and fibula bones. You have cartilaginous type of joints between epiphysis and diaphysis of the long bones. You have the same type of joint between the vertebrae and at pubic symphysis. You have synovial type of joints at shoulder and hip joints. Also at elbow and knee joints. All movable joints fall under this category.
