There are five types of bones in the human body: long, short, flat, irregular and sesamoid.

  1. Long bones are characterized by a shaft, the Diaphysis, that is much greater in length than width. They are comprised mostly of Compact bone and lesser amounts of marrow, which is located within the medullary cavity, and spongy bone. Most bones of the limbs, including those of the fingers and toes, are long bones. The exceptions are those of the wrist, ankle and kneecap (patella).
  2. Short bones are roughly cube-shaped, and have only a thin layer of compact bone surrounding a spongy interior. The bones of the wrist and ankle are short bones, as are the sesamoid bones.
  3. Flat bones are thin and generally curved, with two parallel layers of compact bones sandwiching a layer of spongy bone. Most of the bones of the skull are flat bones, as is the sternum.
  4. Irregular bones do not fit into the above categories. They consist of thin layers of compact bone surrounding a spongy interior. As implied by the name, their shapes are irregular and complicated. The bones of the spine and hips are irregular bones.
  5. Sesamoid bones are bones embedded in tendons. Since they act to hold the tendon further away from the joint, the angle of the tendon is increased and thus the leverage of the muscle is increased. Examples of sesamoid bones are the patella and the pisiform.

If you are asking about the classifications of different types of bones, there are four.

1. Long bones, such as the femur and humerus.

2. Short bones, which are more cube like. For example the small bones in the wrist and ankle. A special type of short bone called Sesamoid bone is embedded in a tendon like the knee cap.

3. Flat bones, yes this would be the bones that make up much of the skull.

4. Irregular bones, these are the ones left over that do not fit the above descriptions. These would include all the vertebrae in the back and pelvic bones.

Information on the skeletal system?

The skeletal system consists of bones and joints. The skeletal system serves many important functions. It provides shape and form for our bodies and it also provides the functions for our bodies. It supports and protects the body. The skeletal system allows bodily movement. It produces blood for the body. It also stores minerals. The human skeletal system is made up of 206 bones. These bones are made of living tissues that store calcium and other minerals. They also make blood cells. Bones consists of cells surrounded by a matrix. This matrix consists of about 35 percent protein and about 65 percent mineral salts. This combination makes bone 5 times stronger than steel. THE skeletal
