These peoples are from very different cultures, though both are strongly tribal based. However, I feel that Maori from their advanced position are able to offer leadership and advice to many Oceanic peoples who wish to journey into a modern economy and broader culture. Maori have done so, and are able to help those who desire to do so.

Rapanui and Hawaii are a couple of examples in Polynesia, but there are nations in Melanesia and Micronesia that may welcome guidance in their aspirations.

In my experience, Maori and Pakeha relations are fraught with tension. There are two 'types' of Pakeha/New Zealanders, in New Zealand. There are people who embrace the Maori culture, and understand its uniqueness and mana, and there are others who completely think Maori is stupid and will dis it at every chance they get. For example, in my Latin class one girl said her sister did Maori instead of Latin, and the whole class went psycho, going on about how Maori is a dead language and Latin is so much better... Maori is definitely not a dead language, it is spoken by people around New Zealand and there are schools and kindergartens that teach in Maori. There are also some rural parts of NZ where the language with most fluency is Maori. A lot of New Zealanders that I have had contact with (I am a high school student in Auckland) think that Maori people just take all their money. This is mostly because I have far too much contact with National voting only-out-for-themselves type people (the irony is that National is in a coalition with Maori party). However this does not mean that Maori and other New Zealanders do not get on well together, because they do. Some New Zealanders are very ignorant and do not understand how important Maori culture is.

I'm not sure if this helps you... I'm mostly angry at my Latin class for being such ignorant jerks, including the teacher. Definitely not taking Latin next year. And Maori is WAY better than Latin anyway, it would take a lot of years of practice to learn to speak Latin. Even my Latin teacher cannot speak Latin. Maori is easier to understand (for me) and is more euphonious than Latin, because of the high number of vowels. In New Zealand there are Maori radio stations and channels, and government documents are translated into Maori as well.

Not seeking to improve your answer at all , although as a non-Maori, I have have great relationships with Maori my whole life, from early schooldays to now when most of my workmates are Maori. I have been blessed I guess. As for the idea that Latin is better than Maori - well the very idea is too ridiculous. For a start off there is no race of 'Latins' as such but there very definitely are Maoris and their language is Maori. It is a very beautiful, flowing, poetic language - in my mind it is equally as flowing as French, Italian and Spanish. It is also a very logical language and relatively easy to speak and to learn. As for singing - Maori songs are among the most beautiful in the world. The words and the melody together are quite stunning.

Why do aboriginals get benefits?

the reason Aboriginals get more benefits then the mainstream Australia; IE white Australians (yes i am white), is because we have taught not only the aboriginal people but also the youth of this country (I'm only 24) that the past grievances of the people are still as problematic today as they were many years ago... the sins of our fathers plague our sons. We have stripped the rights of the aboriginal people to integrate with mainstream Australia by holding their hands and giving them "sit down" benefit's. By protecting the aboriginals and isolating the rest of the Australian population, we as a country have created a generation of people who are entirely dependant on taxpayer funded handouts and benefit's. I think it would be hard to find many people who would not take advantage of a benefit scheme as the aboriginals are... when the scheme is removed or threatened, the aboriginals and do-gooder Australians jump up and down and call racist. As we are a multicultural country, this is a terrifying thing, so the government keeps the benefit's.
