Reason 1: In a parallel circuit if one appliance breaks e.g. a bulb, the other appliances on the circuit will keep working. If it was a Series circuit, if one appliance broke, all the others would stop working.

Both parallel circuits and series circuits have advantages in certain circuit-design

situations, and disadvantages in others, which is kind of why, after more than

100 years of circuit design evolution, both of them are still used.

To give just one simple example: You have a big pile of small batteries that you

want to use to design a DC power supply

-- If the load has high resistance, needs a high voltage, but will draw only a small

current, then you'll run it with several of your cells connected in series.

-- If the load has low resistance, needs only a low voltage, but will draw large current, then you need to operate it from several of your cells connected in parallel.

A parallel circuit is better because if you want to switch on/off somewhere, you would only switch on/off that place only. In a series circuit, switching on/off somewhere would switch on/off everywhere!

The main advantage is the fact that if your electrical devices are in parallel, it's not

necessary to switch all of them on in order to have any of them work. The device or

devices you switch on can operate even of others in the house are switched off.

None of that would be true if they were in series.
