One of the advantages of narcotic drug is that when used properly and with a prescription they can help to ease pain after surgery. One of the biggest disadvantages of narcotic drugs is that they are very addictive and cause many health problems if used incorrectly.

But if you have health problem you must use drugs because dealing with some health problems is more important then other influences that drugs have. For example, you have Ventolin that helps people with bronchospasms (lungs problem) but the disadvantage of Ventolin is bad influence on heart and vessels. They use it to cure their lung problem but in the meantime they make another problem.

By the looks of the drug abusers I have seen, it seems to me that drug abuse does not hold any advantages at all and has many disadvantages as becoming homeless having or owning anything but their clothes.
