As opposed to other types of sensors for security, photoelectric motion or interruption sensors are fairly easily to install, effective against unsophisticated burglary or entry, and can be purchased in a variety of price ranges and applications. They usually have durable components, depending on price. In interior applications, they can be placed to effectively detect opened doors and windows, or moved items.

Disadvantages

Outages or variations in their power supply can affect their performance. They can be overcome by determined or technically proficient intruders. Outside emitters and detectors are usually visible from the exterior. Weather conditions can create problems due to rain, snow, dust, or fog.

Industry

Advantages

Photoelectric applications range from motion sensing, to automated conveyor direction, to lining up materials and products. They work on most objects and there are innumerable off-the-shelf components available for many operations.

Disadvantages

Depending on the frequency, brightness, sensitivity, and placement, photoelectric beams can be blocked by dust, steam, smoke, moving machinery, or human operators. The emitters will also wear out over time.
