Some advantages ...
  • Probably the major use/advantage of Methane is that it is what we call "Natural Gas," and as such is a MAJOR fuel worldwide! We all are aware of the tremendous value of a relatively easily delivered fuel to our homes, businesses, and factories.
  • Methane [CH4] is also is a basic "building block"for literally dozens, or possibly hundreds, of compounds which we use to make literally thousands of products we use every day. One example is the multitude of different plastics.
  • In the "new" technology vehicles designed to burn Hydrogen, billions of tons of natural gas [Methane] will be thermally "steam cracked" into Hydrogen for use as a motor vehicle fuel, but I don't know yet what plans "they" have for the billions of tons of pure carbon which will be left over from the cracking process.
Some disadvantages ...
  • It is a main contributor to global warming, as it is one of the "greenhouse" gasses which cause entrapment of infrared energy [heat] within the atmospheric envelope around the Earth.
  • It is very dangerous to the human body, in that high enough concentrations in the air can result result in suffocationof air breathing creatures, AND in the proper concentration in the air, it is very highly explosive!

Carbon dioxide gasses are advantageous to the proliferation of plant-life as they provide both fuel for photosynthesis, as well as increase the average planetary temperature of the planet (assuming no disruption of the oceanic halines ).

The disadvantages include increased planetary temperatures for animal life, as well as the potential to melt polar icecaps, which would distrupt the oceanic halines which keep most of the continents from feezing.

Biomethane is a naturally occurring gas which is produced by the so called anaerobic digestion of organic matter such as dead animals and plant material , manure, sewage and organic waste etc. Biomethane is a renewable gas and is better than natural gas because it does the same purpose but found differently and can be used many times rather than once. Biomethane is used in houses, it's done by e.g. Cattle releasing air which goes in a generator and converts it into a form of natural gas which is in your stoves it is released as co2 and then taken in by the grass which is eaten by the cattle and the process is repeated.

Methane as a whole for one is extremely prevalent and can be found nearly every where on earth. Though it is very abundant, and can be harvested at or near oil reserves, there are also some disadvantages to it... Depending of course on both how fine it is and if it has been cleaned of plastics, it burns differently. Of course the cleaner the methane, the better it burns, and the more energy that can be pulled off of it... But sadly more people are lazy in the world and don't go through these cleaning processes. With doing this, the environment gets plastics thrown into the air when these gasses are burned and can potentially cause cancer and other various diseases depending on where the build ups of these plastics accumulate. Sometimes these gas plastics collect in ponds and rivers, which not only threaten humans, but also threaten nearby wildlife. So keep the methane clean!
