There are numerous advantages to petroleum both as a fuel and as a raw material:

  • It has high energy density. You don't need mch to provide a significant amount of usable energy
  • Production systems are simple
  • Storage and transportation systems are simple
  • For transportation it feeds an established distribution bas
  • Safety hazards (and safe handling procedures) are well understood
  • Systems for use as a fuel are simple
  • Spills and leaks are controllable using existing technology
  • As raw material in chemical synthesis it is extremely flexible

As to disadvantages:

  • Over use can create local and global problems
  • It is limited resource which can be used up by wasteful procedures

Petroleum gas harms the environment, as it's unnatural. It's crude oil put through a LARGE amount of changes to get it to become a viable source of combustion. If it spills, which is a common occurrence, it is costly and most times harmful to the ecosystem to remove. Those are the disadvantages.
