Massage therapists have the highest attrition rate. That means that they have the highest turnover of new therapist coming into the profession because the ones that have been there a few years experience burnout and quit. There actually are no statistics that show that more massage therapists burn out than any other profession. Other disadvantages: You can't make much as an entry level therapist. The salary is usually $15 an hour. You can't work many hours a week because of the physical demands. Massage employers have been known to take advantage of massage therapists because the massage jobs are more of a recent phenomenon. You work alone in a dark room all day long with soft music playing. (with the client there of course). You can't talk much to people and isolation is always a challenge. If you start your own business you have to be the marketing manager, the business manager, the sales manager, customer service and answer the phones, do the bookkeeping.

There are many advantages but rarely any disadvantages. One main disadvantage is that the PT may be working with a patient that been holding up a lot of stress, and once the patient thinks the PT has touched them in the wrong way, the patient may harm he/her.

Pros: Doing something you love; working one-on-one; learning new skills to keep motivated and educated in the field; possibility of good money; flexible scheduling. Cons: Can be very difficult on the body (burn out for most therapists is 2-5 years due to the physical strain, sometimes emotional strain as well); money is not consistent; the varied work -sometimes lots of massages, sometimes little or none- is stressful on the body, leading to physical problems; only being able to do a limited massages a day (depends on the individual, but around 4 a day seems to be an average).

The disadvantages of having a massage is that you may be slightly dizzy and have a headache for up to 24 hours after.

If those problems continue for longer, you may have an undiagnosed medical condition.

Also, some techniques can be painful (such as trigger point therapy). They may leave bruises are cause muscle soreness, but these do improve.

If you don't love it, you'll be no good at it. It is not a lucrative profession, unless you are better than most at marketing. You have to be oriented to using your hands and have a serious desire to help people. Sense of touch is important, but this skill can be learned. After 11 years doing this, I can feel tight muscles three inches in from the skin with my fingers and know how to "reach" them with my elbows or my knees.

There is also purely relaxation massage which only touches the skin and muscles within one inch of the skin. This is good for stress relief, which is important. But if you only do this, you cannot help someone who has hurt themselves or has posture problems.

It is hard physical work. If you work for someone else, you must demand enough time to rest and stretch yourself between clients. If you neglect this, you can disable yourself and become unable to work. So again, you must love giving massage.

If you are not trained properly, you can risk damaging your fingers, hands, wrists, or elbows by overuse.

Some people still have a skewed view of what Massage Therapy is about and it can be frustrating and difficult to break stereotypes.

If you do not continue your education, learn from your experiences, and have a desire to really understand and use your knowledge of anatomy- you can become bored.

You have to touch clients that you may rather not touch, usually due to poor hygiene. (As you gain a client base you will encounter this less or possibly never).
