The yellow is unswitched 12V (battery)
red is switched 12V (ignition)
black is ground
the rest should be speakers. usually there's 2 of each color, one solid and one with a black line on it. so if you have one solid purple and one purple w.black line, solid is pos. for a single speaker and black line is neg for that speaker. So say you have 4 colors that one of each has a black line on. it doesnt really matter which is which, it will just mess with your stereo (i mean left/right, not your physical stereo)
Hooking up an aftermarket stereo is usually trial & error. keep trying till you get it right, just make sure you get power to only yellow & red.
Sorry if this is confusing. Check installdr.com to see if they have a guide for your car.
What model it it?
if not, have a look at installdr.com

Hi,
I have a 7256 Alpine car stereo without a wiring diagram. This is from around 1987. What should the colored wires be connected to? The colors are: red, black, dark blue, purple, gray, yellow white, green, and brown. A second red wire is labeled "for interface 2007."
Thanks
