Kepler's Laws: The orbit of a planet is an ellipse with the Sun at one of the two foci. A line segment joining a planet and the Sun sweeps out equal areas during equal intervals of time. The square of the orbital period of a planet is proportional to the cube of the semi-major axis of its orbit.

Eccentricity: the eccentricity of a planet's orbit is not an angle, it is a measure of how far each focus is from the centre of the ellipse. Most of the planets' orbits have low eccentricity so that the Sun's distance from the centre is the main effect of eccentricity.

The Earth's orbit has an eccentricity of 1/60 so that the Sun is 149.6/60 million kilometres from the centre, approximately 2.5 million km. That means our distance from the Sun varies from 147.1 to 151.6 million km approximately.

Where in the solar system are the planets with the highest eccentricity found?

There is no strict pattern. Mercury, the innermost planet, has the highest eccentricity. Venus, the next nearest to the sun, and Neptune, the outermost have the least eccentricities.

How was the axis tilt noticed?

They checked the angles of the Sun, planets and moon. From our sight we can tell that it is slightly angles. If that's not convincing enough the satellites captures the angle.

Is the shape of the orbit of each planet a circle?

They are all approximately circle and in the same plane, but when you look further, they are actually elliptical and off centre from the sun. They also tend to have slightly inclined planes. These eccentricities mean that planets are sometimes closer to the sun than at other times.

Does the sun orbit the planets or do the planets orbit the sun?

The planets orbit the Sun. The Sun is at the center of our solar system and does not move.

Does the sun travel around the planets or do the planets travel around the sun?

The planets travel around the sun.

How many moons do the suns have?

The Sun has no moons. Moons orbit Planets > Planets orbit the Sun.

Does the sun orbit the planets?

No. The planets orbit the Sun and the Sun orbits itself.

Are the planets like moons to the sun?

The planets are satellites of the sun. The moons are satellites of the planets. The moons revolve around the planets captured by their gravity, while the planets revolve around the sun captured by its gravity and the sun.

How does gravity between the sun and planets control the path the planets make around the sun?

The sizes of the Sun and planets determine the strength of gravitational pull of the planets on each other and the Sun. The Sun's mass is so great that the planets can't escape from the Sun's pull and so as the planets are moving by the Sun pulls them back into orbit.

What pulls the planets to the sun?

The sun's gravity pulls the planets.

Where is the sun in relation to the planets?

The planets orbit the central sun.

What do the planets and the sun orbit?

the sun does not move, the planets orbit around the sun idiot.
