Well, really it would depend on what type of drum, hand drum or a drum you strike with a stick or mallet.
I don't know much about hand drums but if you're talking about other drums a basic step would be to practice your basic stick technique and build muscle memory (which is just a way of saying practice the same motion over and over again so that your muscles get use to the same movement to where you barely have to think about them).
I would suggest practicing on one drum for now moving from your wrists and not your elbow and learn to bounce your stick off the drum head to save you lots of energy.
