The benefits of organizing an Autism Awareness group at your school is giving Autistic students support, helping Autistic students come together to gain support or friendship with Autistic peers, gives Autistic people a safe space, allows students to tackle issues that impact on Autistic students, and allows students to raise money for Autism causes.

It is important that Autistic people take the lead in any sort of Autism Awareness, it is also important to avoid any sort of material from organisations like Autism Speaks which use ableist anti-Autism Propaganda that harms Autistic people under the guise of Autism Awareness.

Is there a school for boys with autism?

There are very few specific schools that are strictly for autism, however there are special education schools. I work with someone who sends their child to a special school that knows how to treat autism as well as other learning disorders. They have special training in how to teach kids with different abilities. Try looking into a school more like this and you should be able to find one.

How does speech therapy help a child with Autism?

A common mistake is to assume that speech therapy is the solution to Autism. Speech therapy certainly has it's place in prompting and refining a child's speech and vocalization but it takes many hours a week of intensive one-on-one work to teach the child with Autism compliance, new concepts, language and age-appropriate behavior. A child with Autism will probably see a speech therapist for 1 or 2 hours a week. It takes a lot more work to get a child with Autism ready for school and to ensure he succeeds at school once he gets there. Once your child is in school, it would be wise to continue the speech therapy sessions. Some schools have a speech therapist that works with the children at the school itself. =============================================================
