Harlem is in Upper Manhattan. Manhattan is one of the five boroughs of New York City: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island.

There are actually two Harlems, West Harlem and East Harlem. West Harlem (which is normally called just plain "Harlem," by native New Yorkers and out-of-towners alike) is the historic black neighborhood where the Harlem Renaissance took place.

East Harlem, which is also called Spanish Harlem, is a predominantly Latino neighborhood.

Since the majority of New York City's neighborhoods do not have precise boundaries, everyone has a different opinion as to exactly where Harlem begins and ends. This is especially true of West Harlem, as it overlaps heavily with the neighborhood known as Morningside Heights.

Generally speaking, however, Harlem runs south to north from 110th Street to around 135th Street, on the West Side of Manhattan (from around Amsterdam Avenue or Morningside Drive to Fifth Avenue).

East Harlem runs south to north from 96th Street to around 135th Street, from Fifth Avenue to the East River.

You can find Harlem very easily on a map of Manhattan, as it is the area directly above Central Park. Central Park is bordered by 110th Street to the north. West Harlem encompasses the area directly above Central Park, and the area directly above it to the west.

The western border of East Harlem begins at the northeast corner of Central Park. Central Park is bordered by Fifth Avenue to the east, and Fifth Avenue is where East Harlem begins.

Harlem, for us Harlemites, goes from West 110th Street north to West 155th Street. It is bounded on the East by the Harlem River and on the west by the Hudson River. As Langston Hughes said, "!10th to 155th; river to river,"

What is the mileage between Manhattan New York and Harlem New York?

Harlem is in Manhattan. Harlem is a neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan. It's the neighborhood directly above Central Park. There are actually two Harlems, West Harlem and East Harlem. East Harlem, also known as Spanish Harlem, is a predominantly Latino neighborhood, while West Harlem is the historic black neighborhood where the Harlem Renaissance took place. Neighborhoods in New York City do not have precise boundaries, but generally speaking, West Harlem ends and East Harlem begins at Fifth Avenue. Fifth Avenue borders Central Park on the east side.

At what street does Harlem start?

There is really no precise answer to this question. The majority of New York City's neighborhoods do not have precise boundaries. I would say that Harlem runs south to north from about 110th Street to around 135th Street, but other people might say it runs from 106th Street to 130th Street, or 116th Street to 145th Street. West to east, however, its boundaries are pretty precise: it runs from the east side of Morningside Park -- the avenue known as Morningside Avenue -- to Fifth Avenue). There are actually two Harlems, West Harlem and East Harlem. West Harlem -- which is normally called just plain, "Harlem," by native New Yorkers and out-of-towners alike -- is the historic black neighborhood where the Harlem Renaissance took place. East Harlem, which is also called Spanish Harlem, is a predominantly Latino neighborhood. East Harlem is one of the few New York City neighborhoods that has pretty precise boundaries. It runs south to north from 96th Street to around 135th Street, and west to east from Fifth Avenue to the East River.

Where did the Harlem Renaissance take place?

The Harlem Renaissance took place in the Manhattan neighborhood of Harlem, in the 1920s through the early 1930s. There are actually two Harlems, West Harlem and East Harlem. West Harlem is where the Harlem Renaissance mostly took place, and has traditionally been a black neighborhood (although in recent years it has seen a big increase in its white population). East Harlem (also known as Spanish Harlem) is a predominantly Latino neighborhood. Since neighborhoods in New York City rarely have precise boundaries, everybody has a different opinion on where Harlem begins and ends. But generally speaking, West Harlem runs south to north from West 110th Street to West 145th Street, and west to east from the Hudson River to Lexington Avenue. Spanish Harlem runs south to north from East 96th Street to East 145th Street, and west to east from Lexington Avenue to the East River.

Is Harlem a city?

No, Harlem is a neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan, in New York City. Actually, it is technically two neighborhoods, West Harlem and East Harlem. East Harlem is also called Spanish Harlem, because it is home to a very large Latino community. West Harlem, on the other hand, is primarily (and historically) a black neighborhood, although in recent years it has seen a big increase in its white population. The neighborhoods do not have precise boundaries, so everybody has a different opinion as to exactly where Harlem begins and ends. Generally speaking, however, West Harlem runs south to north from West 110th Street to West 145th Street, and west to east from the Hudson River to Park Avenue. East Harlem, or Spanish Harlem, runs south to north from East 96th Street to East 145th Street, and west to east from Park Avenue to the East River. 125th Street, which is a two-laned street that runs west/east and east/west from the Hudson River to the East River and back, is considered the heart of Harlem.
