Always remember the acronym C.H.I.P.O

  • Climate change
  • Habitat destruction
  • Invasive Species
  • Pollution
  • Over exploitation
Use the acronym HIPPO. H- Habit alteration. I- Invasive species. P- Pollution. P- Population growth. O- Over-exploitation

The main causes of loss of biodiversity are:

  1. Increase in population
  2. Industrialization and urbanization.
  3. Overgrazing
  4. Pollution of air, water and soil
  5. Habitat destruction
  6. Hunting and killing of animals

Biodiversity loss will greatly impact on the Human society, ecosystems and their valuable services to the nature and humans. There are many perceptible losses at both global and national levels. Some of the major losses are

i) A steady increase in the CO2 Level: Due to disruption in the carbon cycle in the nature will lead to rise in CO2 Level and will lead to global warming. Like increase in deforestation and bio diversity loss increases the CO2 level.

ii) Adverse effects on local climate and water Flow: Due to biodiversity loss there is increase in global mean temperatures which results in climate change and also availability of water.

iii) Extinction of species: it is an irreversible loss of biodiversity. when species are lost we loose

a) Essential components of biodiversity needed to maintain the earth's life supporting systems which reduces the biospheres capacity to support human life.

b) Crucial biological resources like medical or agriculturally or economical will be lost forever.

iv) Increased coastal erosion and loss of fishery productivity due to degradation of the coastal areas such as mangroves coral reefs etc.

v) Loss of traditional knowledge and cultural practices associated with the bio resources that are lost forever.

vi) Loss of livelihood: as a large number of people in the world depends on the bio resources for subsistence use for their livelihood.

vii) Decrease of overall population Size of Species and loss of geographical range due to

a) Splitting of previous connected population into small isolated sub population which are more vunerable for extinction.

b) Activities like pollution, landfills etc. will lead to habitat modification and results in unstability.

c) Contamination of soil, water and air will lead to killing of beneficiary species.

d) Filling of the wetlands leads to the floods.

e) Acid rain due to atmospheric pollution harms the vegetation and crops.

viii) Reduction of genetic diversity of crop species : due to replacement of the traditional crops with high yielding, less resistant and genetically uniform verities/species will have adverse implications on the national food supply.

The major cause of depletion of biodiversity in India is over population. This leads to more usage of resources.

What is a major form of pollution?

Air pollution is one of many major forms of pollution. It causes major damage to the environment including acid rain.

What is land use and habitat loss?

Nowadays, land use and habitat loss is a term widely used to describe the loss of biodiversity (the different types of plant and animal species) in any particular area. For instance, non-sustainable land use, such as deforestation (chopping down forests) is a major cause of habitat loss (plants and animals can no longer survive in the changed environment). Human agriculture (land use) also has a great impact on biodiversity.

How have the people in India changed their environment?

The people of India have changed their environment by working actively on safe water supplies and proper waste disposal. This is having a major impact on disease in this country.

How do you maintain a biodiversity?

Don't cut trees or use hairspray, cut down on driving and don't waste electric because if you do then they'll have to make more so try and recycle edit: While all of this is true, none of these directly maintain biodiversity. Also, hairspray propellants are are no longer CFCs, and are more or less harmless to the environment. Some ways to maintain biodiversity: 1. Stop planting monoculture crops in replacement of diverse forests/plains 2. Stop the use of herbicides 3. Carefully use fertilizers (to prevent algal blooms etc)

Describle three major causes of biodiversity loss in marine ecosystems?

well, pollution is a main one... especially factories that lie on coastal areas... over fishing is another major reason also climate change causes the destruction of the coral and reef habitats which conatins all the nutrients marine life need
